How the Casino Protects

Its Credit Bankroll

How does the customer abuse his credit by taking chips from Strip Casino A and turning them in at Strip Casino B? Here's how. If a player had a $10,000 line of credit at Casino A and simply took out markers till he depleted his credit with-out giving the casino much play, his money would be intact, and he'd have $10,000 in cash in his pocket by cashing these chips at Casino B.

When his stay ended, he'd tell the cashier that he couldn't Pay up on the $10,000 he owed, but would be happy to give them $1,000 and repay the rest within six months. The casino would prefer to get paid at once, but there'd be nothing they could do but wait for their money. And since the player took out $10,000 worth of markers, they'd figure that he gave them $10,000 worth of action, which was not the case at all.

The player now takes $9,000 of the casino's bankroll home with him to use as he sees fit. He may use it in his business, buy Treasury notes, put it in a bank and get the interest, or whatever. And what interest is he paying the casino for the use of their money? Not one red cent. In fact, he could, if he were shrewd enough, be using the casino bankroll to draw interest or invest in stocks or buy supplies for his business, all free of charge to him. It was a sweet racket.

Today this kind of maneuver is difficult to carry out. For one thing, if a player establishes credit at a casino, he can't cash in his chips at a competing Strip hotel. He must cash in at his own casino.

And if a player has credit at a casino, his play is watched closely. If he signs a marker at one table and then leaves abruptly, returning to the cashier's cage to cash in the chips he'll fool no one. What will happen is this: either the pi call the cashier, advising him that this player has taken great many chips without playing them, or the cashier the player if he has taken a marker for his chips.
