How to Obtain Credit

Every con man, every thief, every transient and scam operator eventually passes through a place like Vegas, trying to beat the casinos out of money with fraudulent schemes. The casinos are afraid of giving instant credit, of long-distance verifications. What they prefer is proper correspondence, seeing the person's credit references down on paper with a bank's letterhead above the information.

If a player has been a previous visitor to other Nevada casinos and has established credit at one or more of these clubs, the casino can easily check his or her credit through a central Nevada agency. If the person's credit is good, if previous gambling debts have been paid in a timely fashion, then instant credit may be given at the casino on presentation of proper identification.

If, however, the player has refused to pay gambling debts at another casino or the casino has had trouble collecting and there still remains a sizable balance due, the person's name may go into a file called "the bad rack" and he or she won't be able to obtain credit at any Nevada hotel-casino until all previous debts are paid in full.

A credit line can also be established by putting up front money in the casino cage. This is cash that can be played against by signing markers at the tables. If money is lost, the casino has no fear about collecting because it merely deducts the losses from the deposited money.

If the casino sees that you give it action and have cash to back up the action, it will establish a credit line for you to use on your next trip. However, this should be discussed carefully with the personnel in the cage or the credit department to insure that front money won't be necessary on future visits.
